Morning Star

Within weeks of moving to Washington, DC I was privileged to meet a Kundalini Yoga teacher. For many years I have practiced Tibetan and Kundalini yoga, always alone, trying to decipher poses, adding my own creative spin to my practice.

Now, it is a privilege to have a teacher.

Gyan Mudra

I want to share with you a meditation by the modern master of Kundalini yoga, Yogi Bhajan. This mediation, from the book The Kundalini Yoga Experience: Bringing Body, Mind, and Spirit Together, is for the ninth stage of our soul journey, the subtle body, through which our soul moves after leaving our physical body. It is Exoconsciousness! Enjoy.

Posture: Sit in a comfortable pose with hands in Gyan Mudra and elbows bent, resting on your sides, forearms at 45 degree angle, your right hand extended a hands length further than the left hand.

Meditation: Visualize walking barefoot on grass at dawn. Be open to your senses. Notice the sky lightening. You are connecting with a morning star. Repeat silently, “I am light.” Imagine a shaft of light from the star connecting to your Heart Chakra. Feel the rays turn into a path of light upon which you can walk. Feel your feet on the path of light.  Feel yourself walking up to the stars. Your body becomes more relaxed and lighter; your awareness more subtle.

Carry on walking and mentally repeat, “I am light.” Merge with the light. Breathe in deeply, hold it, and become one with the light. Experience the breath and the light, the inner and the outer, as one. Slowly breath out. Repeat several times, holding your breath as long as possible, Imaging yourself lying on the grass gazing up at the early morning sky and begin to stretch into wakefulness.
